STEVEN COHN*
December 26, 2000 Dear Bill, I am a student at the Anderson School at UCLA, respectfully requesting a spot in Nestlé’s January 31st on-campus marketing internship interview schedule. During October’s reception at the Luxe Hotel as well as at the Nestlé Day-On-The-Job, I had the pleasure of meeting and learning from you and a few of the other UCLA alumni who now contribute daily to Nestlé’s success. Among them, Becky Chao regarding Nestlé’s Carnation Baby Formulas, Martin Sharkey the beverage marketing manager who has since generously spent some time with me over the phone as a Marketing Association brand management ‘mentor,’ and yourself—whose DOJ presentation on the successful re-launch of NesQuik in its new ready-to-drink format was both informative and inspiring. I would be grateful for the chance to add to your success this summer. As Chief-of-Staff at The McLaughlin Group television show in Washington DC during the past few years and as a team leader at a teleconferencing firm earlier in the 90’s, I routinely demonstrated an ability to mobilize working teams, to think creatively, to meet multiple deadlines, and to solve problems from many angles. These leadership and coordination skills—in conjunction with my history of nurturing and preserving The McLaughlin Group’s and General Electric’s brand image on-air and on-line—I expect would transfer productively into Nestlé USA’s brand environment and its successful consumer product marketing mission. I would be grateful for a chance to learn from and contribute to Nestlé’s brand management leadership. (I have a special affinity for Nestlé because your Carnation Instant Breakfasts were a key part of my weight-gaining/work-out routine when I was an undergraduate.) I enclose my resume for your review. Thank you so much for your consideration. I hope to see you on January 31st. Sincerely, Steven Cohn
